Simplifying Expressions – Multiplying
When you multiply expressions, multiply the numbers first, then the letters.
example 3: 3 x m
example 4: m x p
example 5: 4w x 3
example 6: 8y x 3x
In this question, multiply 8 x 3 first to give 24. Then y multiplied by x is xy (alphabetical order)
example 7: m x m
In this question, multiplying m by m gives m²
example 8: 4t x 3t
In this question, multiply 4 x 3 first to give 12. Then t multiplied by t is t² (see indices)
example 9: 8w x 2w²
In this question, multiply 8 x 2 first to give 16. Then w multiplied by w² is w³ (see indices)
example 10: 3w³ x 5w²
In this question, multiply 3 x 5 first to give 15. Then w² multiplied by w³ is w⁵ (see indices)
