Apply

Question 1:

(a)  y = 3x + 2  and  y = 3x – 2  are parallel

(b) y = 1/2x + 1  and  y = -2x + 3  are perpendicular

(c) y = -2x + 3  goes through the point (0, 3)

(d)  y = 2x  and  y = -5x  pass through the origin

(e)  y = 5x – 4,  y = 3x – 2  and  y = -2x + 3  all pass through the point (1, 1)

Question 2:

No they are not parallel, the gradient of 2x + y = 8 is -2 and the gradient of y=2x+5 is 2.

Question 3:

Yes they are perpendicular.  4x – y – 5 = 0 has a gradient of 4 and the gradient of x + 4y + 1 = 0 is -1/4.

Question 4:

(a)  y = 3x + 4

(b) y = -1/3x + 11

Question 5:

(a)  (-4, 0)

(b)  y = -1/2x – 2

Question 6:

y = 2x + 1

Question 7:

Yes, they are parallel. The gradient of Line L is 1/2 and the gradient of Line N is 1/2.
